losing by 170 points 0-0 to 25-20.
The
Under 18’s also went down to the Bombers 3-2 (20) to 28-19 (187).
It should be remembered half of Marion’s
under 18 side still qualify for the under 16 division, therefore every week
the majority of our players are giving away height, strength, and
experience to their opposition. Although we have copped a couple of hidings
this year the Club is very pleased with the endeavour of this group and the
invaluable experience they are gaining. If this group can stay together,
and with the younger ones coming up, Marion
has a bright future. Just hang in their boys it’ll all be worth it in
the end.
The best players were Chris Richmond,
Ben Warne, Trent Morey, Ricky Fechner, Kane Landorf, and Zac Squire. Trent Morey kicked the 3 goals.
In an effort that should have set up
the day The Under 14’s
notched up their first win defeating Brighton
by 6 points 10-0 (60) to 8-6 (54). Again, like the Under 18’s this
group is a bottom age group playing against top age opposition. Keep
working boys, you are the future,
and it is bright.

16
May 2009: Marion’s
inability to seal a game and close down an opposition cost the club third
spot on the ladder after Saturday’s game against Flagstaff Hill. The
Rams had the Bush Pigs done and dusted in the first half but just could not
continue the pressure for the full100 minutes to ice the game.
The Rams started strongly and goaled in
the first minute when Brett Miegel cleared the ball to Scott Beckham who
passed to Adam Knight who goaled from a set shot. Beckham was in the action
soon after when he linked up with Alex Dorman to pass to Nathan Scholar who
kicked Marion’s
second. Dorman was creating havoc and took a great mark and set up Rob
McCard for the Rams third, and Marion
was in complete control.
The Bush Pigs answered soon after
before Beckham was on the receiving end of some hard work by Russell
Stanborough who scrambled the ball forward allowing Marion’s #12 to
kick his first of the game. At the first break Marion held sway controlling the game by
19 points.
The second quarter followed the script
and the Rams powered on when Scholar handballed to Tom Couch who kicked the
first of the quarter. Flagstaff answered but
Scholar and McCard kicked their second each and Marion lead comfortably by 30 points.
This is about the time the Rams went to sleep allowing the Bush Pigs to
kick three of the next four goals (one to Tom McGowan) to reduce the lead
to 18 points at half time.
The third quarter gutted the Rams;
Although Daniel Exelby opened with the first of the quarter 12 seconds in,
the Bush Pigs kicked eight goals to four and completely controlled the
game. After Exelby’s goal, Flagstaff
scored, and then Couch kicked our 10th before Flagstaff
kicked the next two, Mark Beckman got on the end of a Rob McCard pass to
kick Marion’s 11th, but Flagstaff answered
with the next four to take the lead. Beckham kicked his second to level the
scores, but Flagstaff
got away again and kicked the last for the quarter to give them a 6 point
lead at the last change.
The last quarter was a dour struggle
fought out by the defences and although Marion had a number of chances we just
could not kick that goal that would level the scores going down by 6 points.
The goal kickers were Couch, Beckham,
McCard, and Scholar 2 each, with singles to Exelby Beckman, Adam Knight,
and McGowan. The best players were Couch, Dorman, Wade, Miegel, Turner, and
McGowan.

May 2009: For the second year running Marion has played away to Hackham, and as
with last year, were happy to get out of the game without any reports or
injuries.
The back 6 again mastered their
opposing forwards with Luke Turner leading the way, and with Ryan Wade
giving first use to the midfielders Marion controlled the game.
The Rams started slowly and missed a
number of easy shots in the first, but after they became acclimatised the
goals started flowing. Tom McGowan opened with the first major, and Brett
Miegel quickly followed, Brad Smith finally found the target for his first,
followed by Daniel Exelby, McGowan again, Justin Bell, and Smith for his
second giving him 2-4 for the quarter.
The 2nd quarter opened much
like the first with Tom Couch and Alex Dorman winning the clearances and
the forwards getting onto some quality ball. Exelby kicked his second a
couple of minutes in, then Adam Knight chipped in for one, before Brad
Smith decided to dominate slamming on the next 4 to give him 6-4 up to half
time. Tom Couch also got in on the action with a nice goal on the run
giving Marion
a 96 point lead at the long break.
Marion put the foot down
in the second half slamming on 19 goals, 9 in the 3rd and 10 in
the 4th. Daine Miller and Brett Miegel
stepped up the midfield dominance and the Brad Smith show rolled on when he
opened with the first of the half. Bell
kicked his second soon after before Smith again swooped, Ryan Wade the next
then Smith again. It was becoming a bit boring until Nathan Scholar
executed some fancy footwork to notch his first, then Smith, and Smith, and
somewhat surprisingly, Smith handed off to Adam Knight for his second. At
this stage Smith had 11-5 for the game and probably his fifth opponent.
As in the second quarter Exelby opened
with the first of the last quarter, then (ho hum) Smith kicked the next
two. Peter Dean added some perspective to the game by kicking his first,
before Smith and Miegel ran riot kicking the next 5 between them, and
Scholar rounded off a nice game by kicking the last with seconds to go.
In the final wash-up, Smith kicked 15
goals and claimed the BOG award, Miegel kicked 4, Exelby 3, Bell, Adam
Knight, McGowan, and Scholar 2 each, with singles to Couch, Dean, and Wade.
The other best players were Wade, Miegel, Couch, Turner, Scholar, Miller,
and Dorman.

The goal kickers were Mark Beckman, Jonathon Oliver, and Brett Potter with
2 each, and singles to Kevin Sim, Tjianou Thomas,
Jarred Dawson, and Paul McGowan. The best for the Rams were Aaron
Robertson, Robert Steggall, Jonathon Oliver, Jarred Dawson, Simon Black,
and Russell Stanborough.
The
Under 18’s had a hard day at the office going down to Cove at Cove.
The results, goal kickers, and best players are not available at this time.
The
Under 14’s failed to get over the line losing to the Hawks by 57
points 3-3 (21) to 11-12 (78). The best for Marion were Connor McIvor (3 goals),
Stephen Burns, Shane Harvey, Nick Hekmeijer,
Ricky Spier, and Adrian Vanjaarsveldt.
2
May 2009: A 7 goal to nil 2nd quarter sealed the win
for Marion
against the Lonsdale Lions at home. Playing in fine conditions the Rams
controlled the majority of the first quarter without showing it on the
scoreboard to lead by 8 points at quarter time. Tarqe
Williamson (2 goals) and Brad Smith (1) caused the Lions all sorts of match
up problems, while Ryan Wade gave the midfield first use around the
stoppages, and newcomer Tom Couch set the game alight with some tight
clearances.
The Rams set the game up in the second.
The midfield continued to dominate through Couch, Alex Dorman and Scott
Beckham, the back 6 shut down the Lonsdale forwards with Adam Knight, Luke
Turner, and Rob McCard turning any Lions forward thrust into a Marion
attack, and the Williamson/Smith show continued with Tarqe
nailing 3 and Brad 2, and with Nathan Scholar and Justin Bell chipping in
for 1 each the Rams went into the long break with a 53 point buffer.
Marion nailed the
first two goals of the 3rd through Couch who continued to win
the clearances, and when Daniel Exelby and David Flaherty kicked one each the
game was well and truly over.
To the Lions credit they didn’t
stop trying throughout and won the last quarter kicking 4 goals to Marions
2, one each to Tom McGowan and Tom Couch.
The best for the Rams were Tom Couch, Tarqe Williamson, Justin Bell, Alex Dorman, Adam
Knight, and Scott Beckham, with goals to Williamson (5), Smith and Couch (3
each), and 1 each to Exelby, Scholar, Bell, Flaherty, and McGowan.

The Marion Reserves opened their
account with a 7 goal win over the Lions. Marion set it up with a powerfull 2nd quarter and held sway for the
remainder of the day winning 11-6 (72) to 4-6 (30). Mark Beckman was
unstoppable and the difference between the teams with 7 goals. Others to
play well Aaron Robertson, Nathan Backhouse, James Jenkins, Micky Myers, and Wayne Williams. Goal kickers were
Beckman 7, Ben Crichton 2, and singles to Darren Lessue and James Chapman.

May 2009: The Under 18’s had a tough night out when they
played Morphett Vale under lights at home. Marion worked hard throughout to hold the
Emus but just couldn’t break through their strong defences going down
0-1 (1) to 13-23 (101). The best for the Rams were Chris Richmond, Jarred
Speed, Billy Stevens, Aaron Robertson, Fabian
King, and Adam Lock.
25
April 2009: Although the Marion
seniors had a bye for ANZAC Day, great scheduling SFL, couldn’t the
new team had a day off, our Under 14’s and 18’s took the field.
The Under 18’s battled Flagstaff Hill in atrocious conditions and
went down 5-3 (33) to 18-9 (117). The goal kickers for the Rams were Trent
Morey with 2, and 1 each to Fabian King, Wade
Francis, and Aaron Robertson. The best players were Daniel Piper, Aaron
Robertson, Chris Richmond, Trent Morey, and Wade Francis.
Unfortunately, the Under 14 scores,
goal kickers, and best players were not provided.

April 2009: Marion v Morphettville Park games are usually interesting
affairs, but this one was a cracker. Morphettville
Park started the day kicking with
a strong wind, although Marion
controlled the initial few minutes but failed to get a score on the board
before the Roos took first blood with the opening
goal. Marion quickly replied though Brad Smith but Morphies
again answered, then Adam Knight responded when he gathered the ball on the
outer wing and kicked Marion’s second, after that it was all
Morphettville Park when they rattled on 6 unanswered goals to take a 40
point lead into the first break.
The Rams were looking down the barrel
but came out firing in the second and completely blitzed the Roos slamming on 10 unanswered goals. Ryan Wade
dominated the ruck to give the Rams first use, and Alex Dorman, Daniel
Exelby, Scott Beckham, Tyson Robertson, and David Flaherty controlled the
clearances. Luke Turner and Rob McCard covered the back half and Tarqe Williamson and Smith put on a show up forward.
The quarter started with Williamson
marking strongly and converting from the 50, then Beckham notch a running
shot, Tom McGowan slipped in for a lovely left footer on the run,
Williamson, Beckham, Williamson, Smith, Williamson, Brett Miegel from a
free, and finally Smith to round it off, and the Rams went into the long
break 25 points up.
Marion were all over
the Roos, and started the 3rd the way
they finished the 2nd when Williamson kicked his fifth and
Beckham his third. Morphies did finish the
quarter stronger and kicked the last 3 giving Marion a 21 point buffer at three quarter
time.
The wind completed disappeared at the
start of the last and the Roos kicked the opening
three goals of the quarter to reduce the margin to a straight kick. Marion stretched it a
little when Damien Knight marked strongly and kicked truly from 40 but the Roos came again and kicked the next 2 squaring up the
match. Again Marion
steadied and sealed the contest when Beckham and Smith each notched their
forth goals.
The best for the Rams were Scott
Beckham, Tarqe Williamson, newcomer Jack Lush,
Ryan Wade, Alex Dorman, David Flaherty, Brad Smith, Tom McGowan, and Damien
Knight. Tarqe Williamson kicked 5 goals, Smith
and Beckham 4 each, with singles to A Knight, D Knight, McGowan, and
Miegel.

April 2009: Round 1 and the Rams are on the board. Playing Aldinga at
home in blustery conditions it took the Rams a bit of time to get the
scoreboard started, but once Tarqe Williamson
opened with the first goal of the game, David Flaherty and Ryan Wade
quickly followed. Aldinga then added 2 of their own before Rob McCard came
into play and posted his first of six for the day.
With the Rams winning the centre
clearances through Wade, Damien Knight, Alex Dorman, and Brett Miegel it
wasn’t long before McCard had slotted two more and D Knight finished
the first half with a strong mark in the goal square to post another after
the siren.
After the long break, Aldinga started
the better and posted the first for the quarter. A short time later McCard
notched his forth, but Aldinga kept pressing and strung together two more,
before D Knight snapped one from the 50 to give the Rams a 31 point buffer
at ¾ time.
Aldinga again started better after the
break kicking the first, but Marion
steadied with McCard and Flaherty kicking two each. Aldinga notched another
before Mark Beckman got in on the act snapping truly for his first giving
Marion a 53 point win.
The best for the Rams were Brett
Miegel, Alex Dorman, Ryan Wade, and Rob McCard. McCard kicked 6 goals,
Flaherty 3, Damien Knight 2, and singles to Williamson, Wade, and Beckman.
Congratulations to first gamers Chris
Richmond and Tyson Robertson.

Unfortunately, the reserves failed to
notch up their first win going down to the Sharks by 14 points 5–10
(40) to 8-6 (54). The best for Marion
were Doug Bell, Jonathon Oliver, Jarred Dawson, Mick Myers, and Darren
Chandler. Ben Crichton kicked 2 goals, with 1 each to Russell Stanborough,
Paul McGowan, and Darren Chandler.
The Under 18’s had a tough day
against Brighton at home losing by 171
points 2-1 (13) to 27-22 (184). This is the first year for quite a while Marion has been able
to fill an Under 18 side and the majority of the players are still eligible
for Under 16’s. The best for Marion
were captain Chris Richmond (who also suited up for the A’s), Billy
Stevens, Matt Perry, Adam Lock, and Tim Ferguson. Lock and Ferguson kicked one
goal each.
The Under 14’s had an 18 point
loss to Aldinga 2-4 (16) to 5-4 (34). The best for the Rams were Jordan
Marsh and Jack Guppy. Special thanks to the 6/7 players who are filling
in.

March 2009: Ouch; playing football in cricket season just
doesn’t suit the Rams. Starting the season with a catch up game
against Brighton just didn’t help
either. Marion were just outpointed and outplayed by a very competitive
unit at the Glenelg oval going down to the tune of 129 points 3 – 5
(23) to 23 – 14 (152).
The best for the Rams were team leaders
Luke Turner and Damien Knight, new comer Brayden Kain, and first gamer Peter Dean. The goal scorers were
Rob McCard with 2, and Mark Beckman 1.
The reserves didn’t fair much
better losing by 89 points 3 – 1 (19) to 16 – 12 (108). Best
players included Chris Richmond, Jonathon Oliver, and Russell Stanborough
with goals to Richmond,
Wayne Williams, and Tony Nobes.
23
March 2009: Due to the bye this year, Marion will start their 2009 campaign this coming
Sunday with a catch-up game against Brighton
at Glenelg Oval
The Club will also be missing a number
of players who suited up in 2008.
Past skipper Darren Banyer along with
Brett Fishpool and Cameron Hatcher have decided to hang up their boots,
Banyer swapping his for a pair of running shoes at South
Adelaide. All three players will be sorely missed. 200 gamers
Darren and Brett leave the game after very successful careers, both gaining
life membership of the Rams and a premiership medallion in 2000.
Marion will also miss their
inspirational 2008 best and fairest winner Wes Bilney who is lining up for
the Northern Bullants in the VFL, although we do
expect Wes will still play a couple of games for the Rams in 2009.
It’s not surprising that Wes has already come under the spotlight
being one of only a few Bullants to play in a
trial for Carlton
recently, and consequently getting a few lines in the VFL section of Inside
Football. Most at Marion could see why when
Wes dropped by for a kick and proceeded to dazzled the field for Marion in our trial game against Flinders Park
on March 15.
Others who have sought greener pastures
this season are Marion’s
2008 leading goal kicker Ben Stokes and midfielder Jason Marks. The Club
wishes them all the best for the future.
On a more positive note Marion have a number
of new signings in 2009. Tarqe Williamson has
signed on from Meadows, and Brad Smith, David Flaherty, and Miles Upton
have all followed Daniel Exelby down from Ironbank.
Marion has also
signed Jonathon Oliver and Scott Beckham, along with juniors Tim Milera, Dane Miller, and Alex Dorman, while Casey
Campbell and Ben Creighton will be back in 2009.
An Open Letter from Daniel
Exelby to all Players, Officials, and Supporters
Dare to Succeed
2009
Firstly
we would like to welcome new players and officials to the club. With new
people comes new expertise and possibilities.
Let
me assure the playing group and supporters that I will be doing the best I
can to get a committed, determined playing group ready to take on the
challenges that are ahead.
*NO TROUBLE MAKERS – NO
PASSENGERS – NO WHINGERS –
NO BLUDGERS – NO
INDIVIDUALS – WE HAVE TO BE ABOUT THE TEAM*
The
question now is “Do you dare to make a difference?”
Whilst
we are a little nervous as you may be, we are more so really excited about
the road ahead and the opportunity to be a part of a group of committed,
passionate people who have the ability to take the Marion Football Club to
the next level.
We
are determined that we will create an environment that challenges each and
every one of us, and that in the process we learn to be “comfortable
being uncomfortable”. Whilst still having fun and growing as players
and friends.
We
truly believe we are capable of great things and it is important that we be
aware of and honour our past, but be totally committed to the future. We
want to make it clear from day one that 2009 is a new year, we are a new
side and we have a new objective.
To
succeed in this way we ask each of you for your dedication during pre-season training. These trainings are NON NEGOTIABLE; compulsory
attendance by all squad members is required! However situations happen and
if you are unable to make training for a particular reason please contact
either of us! Communication is important on and off the field.
In
closing I would like to say I am excited about the year ahead & am
determined to make a difference and bring success to the Marion Football
Club. This will mean new players, new game plan and new attitude. We have
very good passionate people off the field and as coaching staff and
officials we ask of you the players to pay some respect to the club and
pull your weight and put in to be the best we can be by:
·
Training every session possible
·
Attend & support all club functions
·
Attend & support presentations
RESPECT
YOUR CLUB & EACH OTHER – Even as simple as putting your strapping
in the bin and not leaving it for someone else to clean up.
Always
remember the phrase...“If it
was easy, everyone would do it. It’s the fact it’s hard that makes
it great!”

11 October 2008: As per expectations Wes Bilney
was awarded the Best and Fairest trophy for the Marion Football Club in
season 2008. Wes had an outstanding year and polled 173 votes in 16 out of
a possible 18 games. Wes led the count by 54 votes.
Wes and Ben Stokes
also tied in the goal kicking nailing 34 each for the season.
Brett Miegel also
had a top season and won the Runner Up to the Best and Fairest award
polling 119 votes in 18 games. This is the second year running Brett has
won this award which is a great achievement for a player who plays
predominately on a wing.
The Mark Edwards
Memorial Trophy for the Best Team Man in 2008 was awarded to Luke Turner.
Luke’s on-field commitment epitomises what the award is all about and
is certainly a worthy winner.
The Most Consistent
Trophy for 2008 was won by Richie Ray-Zwar. Richie was regularly in the best players throughout the
year and polled 107 votes in 15 of the 18 games.
Mick Myers had a
great season in the twos and won the Reserves Best and Fairest. Runner Up
to the Best and Fairest Tyson Stephens also had a great year. Matt Black
picked up the Most Consistent award and Nathan Backhouse the Best Team Man.
The award for the
Most Improved Club Player in 2008 was presented to Peter Dean. Peter has
worked extremely hard on his game this year and that hard work certainly
showed in the latter stages of the year as he became an important part of
the reserves squad.
The Shane Welsh
Memorial Trophy for the best club junior was awarded to Chris Richmond.
10 October 2008: The Marion Football Club is
pleased to announce that Daniel Exelby will coach the club in 2009 and
beyond. Marion’s
incumbent coach Steve Emery has endorsed Daniel’s selection as a
forward step in the club’s development.
31 August 2008:
Congratulations to Wes Bilney who was invited to try out at West Adelaide at the end of the Ram’s 2008
campaign. Wes played reserves for the Bloods today and performed well
enough to warrant a preseason and a chance to play SANFL in 2009. Starting
on a wing, Wes kicked the Bloods first score (a poster) before moving into
a permanent forward crumbing role and finished with 3.2 for the day out of
the Bloods total score of 9.12. As the game wore on Wes tried a couple of
customary grabs and had the crowd in raptures over his evasive skills (ho
hum, we saw it every week). It
was obvious to the Marion
contingent at the game Wes will be a crowd favourite at Westies and should do
very well in their line-up.
23 August 2008: Marion
finished the season on a high with a 49 point win over Noarlunga but will
miss out on September action by a measly 0.8%. The Shoes were out of the
blocks quickly and kicked the first of the match before Marion settled into stride and kicked 3
quick ones, 2 to Tom McGowan and 1 to Warrick Stanborough, but the Shoes
surged again and kicked the last 2 of the 1st quarter to lead by
2 points at the break.
In the second Noarlunga had the majority of play
with 8 scoring shots to 3, but they burnt a lot of football and allowed the
Rams to stay in touch with goals to Bilney and McGowan. Noarlunga held a 7
point lead at the long break and the Rams had played poorly up to half time
and hadn’t really had any influence on proceedings.
Marion fired
in the third and slammed on 5 goals while holding the Shoes to 1. Ben
Stokes was relieved at full back and went forward to support Rob McCard and
McGowan, Damien Knight went back to centre half back and with Luke Turner steadied
the back half, and Wes Bilney, Warrick and Russell Stanborough, Richie Ray-Zwar, and Adam Knight, assisted by the
wingers, Brett Miegel and Jason Marks, controlled the midfield and
continually drove the ball into the forward fifty. Stokes was rewarded for
playing in front and kicked 2 goals for the quarter, and Bilney, Warrick
Stanborough, and Rob McCard kicked 1 each.
The last quarter pretty much went to plan with
the Rams slamming on 5 while holding the Shoes scoreless. Bilney and Stokes
added to their tallies kicking 2 each and Warrick Stanborough his 3rd
for the game.
Overall Marion
had five goal kickers for the game with Bilney and Stokes kicking 4 each,
McGowan and Warrick Stanborough 3 each, and Rob McCard 1. Marion’s best were Tom McGowan, Warrick
Stanborough, Richie Ray-Zwar, Jason Marks, Ben
Stokes, and Adam Knight.

Unfortunately, the Reserves failed to muster a
win for Paul Ditchburn’s last game going
down to the Shoes by 34 points, 5-4 (34) to 10-8 (68). The game was tight
for most of the day but the Shoes managed to string a few together in the
last quarter to finally take the points. Best for the Rams were Mick Myers,
Paul Ditchburn, Matt Black, Nick Pryzabilla, and
Ian Day. Rob Layton kicked 2 goals, and Josh Boyd, Nick Debrenni,
and Colin Maddocks 1 each.
16 August 2008: Marion
managed to hold off a fast finishing Aldinga at Aldinga to record their
seventh win for the season. The win keeps the Rams in touch with the eight
and next weeks round will determine who out of 4 teams will fill the 7th
and 8th spots. The Sharks won the toss and started well with the
breeze kicking the first couple before Richie
Ray-Zwar steadied the Rams recording Marion’s
1st. The Sharks kicked their 3rd soon after, before
Darren Banyer and Ben Stokes got into the act and scored 2 quick ones to
tie the scores up at ¼ time.
After the break Marion started strongly, and
with the back half shutting down Aldinga’s forwards, the mids controlling the clearances and driving the ball
into the forward fifty, and the forwards getting clean ball, Marion
recorded 6 majors for the quarter to Wes Bilney, Brett Miegel, Banyer (2),
Justin Bell, and Rob McCard. Up to half time Wes Bilney, Adam Knight, Brett
Meigel, Tom McGowan, Richie
Ray-Zwar, Jason Marks, and Ryan Wade were playing great footy and
controlling much of the play.
Both teams were competitive after the long break
and traded scores for much of the quarter. Aldinga kicked 2 for the quarter
but the Rams also slotted 2 to Stokes and Bilney to hold a 30 point buffer
at ¾ time.
The Rams were kicking with the wind in the last,
but the quarter didn’t quite go to plan, and the Sharks controlled
the play and had Marion’s
defence working overtime to hold them at bay. Aldinga kicked 3-2 for the
quarter and Marion
failed to capitalise on their few forward thrusts and were held scoreless,
but with time on their side eventually ran out winners by 10 points.
The best for the Rams were Wes Bilney, Adam
Knight, Brett Miegel, Richie Ray-Zwar, Ryan Wade,
Jason Marks and Andrew Golding, with Darren Banyer kicking 3 goals, Wes
Bilney and Ben Stokes 2 each, and Richie
Ray-Zwar, Justin Bell, Rob McCard, and Brett Miegel 1 each.

The Reserves failed to get over the line in a game they should have
won. Marion held a good lead early in the game but were run over in the 2nd
half to lose by 18 points 10.5 (65) to 13.5 (83). Best for the Rams were
Adam Miegel, Tim Evans, Paul Ditchburn, Gary Johns, and Mick Myers. Goal
kickers were Adam Miegel, Matt Black, and Tyson Stephens 2 each, Wayne
Williams, Josh Boyd, Tim Evans, and Nick Pryzabilla
1 each.
Next Saturday holds plenty of emotion as one of Marion’s most
respected personnel will play his last game for the Club. Paul Ditchburn’s 253rd senior game will be
his last for the Rams as he and his partner Tanya are off to Kuwait for a few years. Paul’s leadership, commitment, knowledge, and
advice will be sorely missed by his team mates, fellow committee members,
and the coaches and leadership group. Good luck guys, on behalf of the Club
we wish you all the best for the future.
9 August 2008: Marion
kept their finals hopes alive when they picked up the 2 points by defeating
O’Sullivan’s Beach/Lonsdale in atrocious conditions at Morphett Vale High School.
The Rams won the toss and kicked up the hill with a slight breeze in the 1st,
and although they controlled the majority of the quarter, trailed the Lions
at the first change 1-5 to 2 straight, Mark Beckman Marion’s only
goal kicker.
In the 2nd Marion continued the slog and held the
Lions scoreless while Wes Bilney slotted two valuable goals into the wind.
The Rams were following instructions, and showing more desperation for the
ball winning the 50/50 contests. The backlines held firm and Tom McGowan,
Wes Bilney, and Russell Stanborough were playing great footy in the
conditions giving their team-mates first use of the ball out of the
packs.
After the long break Marion continued to push hard and again
held the Lions scoreless. Jason Marks kicked Marion’s
4th goal and soon after Darren Banyer widened the buffer when he
kicked his 1st for the game, Marions fifth, giving the Rams a 30 point
lead at the break.
The final quarter followed the script, and
although the Rams let the Lions have a bit more ball Marion still maintained the ascendency to
run out winners by 40 points. Warrick Stanborough had a great 2nd
half and he and Darren Banyer kicked one goal each for the quarter.
The best for the Rams were Warrick Stanborough,
Wes Bilney, Tom McGowan, Russell Stanborough, and Richie
Ray-Zwar. Andrew Golding and Adam Knight also played serviceable footy in
the back half. Congratulations also to Craig Woods in his first league game
for the Rams.
Marion’s
goal kickers were Bilney and Banyer 2 each, Beckman, Marks, and Warrick
Stanborough 1 each.

The Reserves also had a good win over the Lions to keep their chances
of September action alive, running out winners by 84 points, 12-13 to 0.1.
Much of Marion’s
play was set up in the back half, and Tim Evans and Mick Myers had great
games kicking 2 and 5 goals respectively. Matt Black and Paul Ditchburn
continued their good form and Colin Maddocks also played well. Along with
Myers and Evans, Paul McGowan chipped in for 3 goals, and Christian Denman
and Under 16 Kane Landorf kicked 1 each.
It was great to see Kane up for his first senior
game. It’s a good sign for the Club that some of our youngsters are
starting to have an influence at the senior selection table, well done
Kane.
5 August 2008:
Congratulations to Ben Stokes and his partner Jackie on the
birth of Jai Casey.
2 August 2008:
Congratulations to Mark and Peta Beckman
on the birth of Mai-Lee (8lb 1oz), sister to Eva-Mae and Ethan.
Also in the news, Damien
Knight and partner Cara Savarton
announced their engagement on Saturday, well done skip.
2 August 2008: The Rams suffered their second biggest
loss for the season when they met a rampaging Morphett Vale at Sturt Rd. The
Emus were just too big and superbly drilled and punished the depleted Rams
all over the park. Besides a period in the 2nd quarter when the
Rams kicked 4 straight Morphett Vale controlled the entire game.
The best for the Rams were Wes Bilney, Brett
Miegel, Adam Knight, Andrew Golding, and Russell Stanborough.
Aaron Dereuver kicked 2 goals for the Rams, and
Darren Banyer, Wes Bilney, and Rob McCard 1 each.

It was virtually the same story for the Reserves who were also
soundly beaten on the day 1.0 to 29.8.
Paul Ditchburn was the best for Marion
with Mick Myers, Gary Johns, Tjiangu Thomas, and Craig Woods also playing
well. Simon Black kicked the Rams solitary goal.
Next week we’re off to Lonsdale and we really need all of our
barrackers, partners, and injured players to get up there and give us all
the support they can.
30 July 2008:
Congratulations to Paul Ditchburn and Tanya Killeen on announcing
their engagement, furthermore, Paul and Tanya are off to Kuwait
later in the year, good luck guys.
26 July 2008: The Rams chances of September action took
a huge tumble when they lost to Morphettville
Park by 58 points at Denham Avenue.
The Roos ran harder and shut down the Rams
midfield, and Marion’s
inability to handle the oval conditions, and too many turnovers, cost them
the game.
The best for the Rams were Brett Fishpool, Wes
Bilney, Richie Ray-Zwar, Warrick Stanborough, and
Brett Miegel.
Ben Stokes kicked 2 goals for the Rams, and
Darren Banyer, Wes Bilney, Rob McCard, Brett Miegel, Tom McGowan, and Rob
Layton 1 each.

The Reserves had a much better day and belted the Roos
from the first bounce. Mark Beckman was on fire and kicked 8 goals up to ½
time. The Rams steadied in the second half but ran out comfortable winners
by 59 points, 18.3 (111) to 7.10 (52).
Craig Woods won the best on ground award for the
second week running and Dwayne Sim, Mark Beckman, Gary Johns, and Adam
Miegel also played well. Mark Beckman finished with 9 goals, Dwayne Sim and
Willis Trott 3 each, while Cory Vandresco, Craig
Woods, and Wayne Williams kicked 1 each.
19 July 2008: The Rams travelled to Doctors Road to take on Hackham and
just did what they had to, to win the game.
The Rams back six again set the game up with
Brett Fishpool, Luke Turner, and Adam Knight creating the run out of
defence, and Cameron Hatcher, Andrew Golding and Aaron Dereuver working
hard in and under.
Wes Bilney was on fire in the 1st and
iced the quarter with 3 goals while Russell Stanborough, Cohen Sulicich and
Richie Ray-Zwar kicked 1 each.
Ben Stokes went into the ruck in the 2nd
and gave the Rams first use of the ball and they had 17 scoring shots,
slotting 9 goals for the quarter. Stokes kicked 3, Rob Layton 2, and
Sulicich, Jason Marks, Joe McCallum, and Justin Bell 1 each.
It was the Darren Banyer show in the 3rd
when the skipper nailed 3 as the Marion
machine ran hard through the corridor to slam on 10 goals. The midfielders
and forwards also got in on the action with singles to Russell Stanborough,
Layton, Tom
McGowan, Ray-Zwar, Mark Beckman, Stokes, and halfback Fishpool.
In the last the Rams took their foot off and
only managed 5 goals out of 11 shots for the quarter, McCallum kicking 2
and Bilney, Banyer, and Beckman 1 each
Brett Fishpool was outstanding for the Rams
throughout the game picking up 46 possessions off half back. Richie Ray-Zwar also had big numbers with 52 touches.
Others to play well were Adam Knight, Tom McGowan, Darren Banyer, Wes Bilney,
Warrick Stanborough, and Ben Stokes.
Marion had
thirteen goal kickers for the game; Bilney, Banyer, and Stokes kicked 4
each, Layton and McCallum 3, Sulicich,
Beckman, Russell Stanborough, and Ray-Zwar 2, and Bell, Marks, Fishpool, and McGowan 1.
The Rams now sit one game out of the eight and
with a reasonable percentage need to keep on winning, and have the cards
drop their way, to pick off a spot in the finals.

The Reserves also had a big win 19.22 (136) to 1 behind. The best for
Marion were
Craig Woods, Tyson Stephens, Ian Day, Paul McGowan, and Gary Johns.
Willis Trott kicked 4 goals, Tjiangu Thomas and
Corey Vandresco 3, Stephens, McGowan, and Dwayne
Sim 2, and Christian Denman, Max McCallum, and Rohan
Mallard 1 each.
12 July 2008: Kicking with a strong wind in the 1st,
the Rams started slowly against Christies Beach with goals difficult to
come by as both teams worked hard in the packs, and Marion had only managed 4 up to the break
with Jason Marks, Rob McCard, Mark Beckman, and Darren Banyer slotting 1
each.
The Rams went on the defensive in the 2nd,
out to protect their 24 point lead, and the back 6 worked overtime
repelling opposition forays to hold Christies goalless for the quarter.
Cameron Hatcher, Tyson Stephens, and Adam Knight hit the ball and the
opposition hard causing the spillages, while Brett Fishpool, Andrew
Golding, and Luke Turner mopped up the crumbs to turn defence into attack. Ben
Stokes and Justin Bell again controlled the rucks, and Brett Miegel,
Warrick and Russell Stanborough, Wes Bilney, and Tom McGowan worked in,
under, and around the packs. Warrick Stanborough slotted a goal early in
and Rob McCard notched his second, the Rams sixth, later in the quarter
giving Marion
a 6 goal buffer. Miegel, Knight, Russell Stanborough, McGowan, and Bell were the best for
the Rams up to the long break.
Again in the 3rd the Rams started
slowly, but Brett Miegel, Wes Bilney, and Justin Bell continued their first
half form to push the ball forward and were rewarded with Bilney kicking 2
goals for the quarter and Miegel 1.
Marion just
didn’t seem to have a big enough lead, and when the wind picked up in
the last, and Christies started to rattle a few on, things got testy. After
the initial flurry the back 6 again held firm and the midfield regained
their composure and controlled the stoppages, and when Banyer kicked his
second and Cohen Sulicich and Joe McCallum chipped in for 1 each, Marion maintained
enough of a buffer to run out comfortable winners.
The goal scorers were Banyer, McCard, Wes Bilney
2, Beckman, McCallum, Marks, Miegel, Warrick Stanborough, and Sulicich 1
each. Brett Miegel, Justin Bell, Wes Bilney, Adam Knight, Luke Turner, Warrick
and Russell Stanborough, and Tom McGowan were the best for the Rams.

The Reserves again failed to post a win with Matt Black picking up BOG
honours after being runner up for the last couple of weeks. Rowan Mallard,
Nick Pryzibilla, Scott Fitzgerald, and Mick Myers
were also in the best, with Kevin Sim, Willis Trott, and Josh Boyd kicking
1 goal each.
5 July 2008: Hmmm, another Saturday, another top four
team, and another short loss. The Rams just can’t seem to get over
the top sides at the minute going down to the Vikings at Taylors Road,
but the signs are looking good, and a big win is not far away.
The Rams started the game well and matched the
Vikings with both teams kicking 3 1st quarter goals, Rob McCard
with 2 and Rob Layton slotting 1.
Again Wes Bilney was the pick of the bunch, and
the mid-field started to click with Ben Stokes beating a taller opponent in
ruck, the Stanborough boys playing great supportive roles as ruck rovers,
and with Richie Ray-Zwar, Brett Miegel, and Jason
Marks running hard to create forward options, the Rams were right in the
game.
The back half were also combining well,
repelling numerous Viking forays forward to turn defence into attack, and
their hard at it, no nonsense approach, tackling pressure, and 1%ers were
terrific.
In the 2nd the Vikings hit the ground
running and blasted 5 majors to the Rams 2, kicked by Jason Marks and Aaron
Dereuver. Up to this time McCard was running hot, and was the best of the
forwards until he was KO’d in a marking contest.
The loss of McCard meant skipper Damien Knight
was sent forward to give the team a target, leaving a shorter defensive
unit. Despite this, the backs worked hard to cover the lack of talls and the Rams held their opposition to 1 goal in
the 3rd and posted 3 of their own with Ben Stokes, Wes Bilney,
and Cohen Sulicich kicking 1 each.
Again in the last the Valleys pushed out to a
big lead but with Luke Turner plugging the hole and controlling centre half
back the Rams just kept coming, and when Mark Beckman set up a goal for the
injured McCard and slotted one himself, and Damien Knight kicked 1 the
margin again narrowed to a few points.
The last few minutes were frenetic with both
sides throwing themselves into the contest, but the Rams just could not get
the ball, or the decisions, going their way to nail the win, eventually
falling short by 19 points.
Goal scorers were McCard 3, Layton, Marks, Dereuver, Stokes, Bilney,
Sulicich, Knight, and Beckman 1 each.
Wes Bilney was again Marion’s best, followed by Ben
Stokes, Brett Miegel, Warrick Stanborough, Cameron Hatcher, Richie Ray-Zwar, and Damien Knight.

The Reserves failed to post a win but the usual
suspects were again in the best. Tyson Stephens must have added his name to
the list of recalls to the league side after his second best on ground in two
games. Likewise Matt Black, a close second to Tyson in both weeks. Tjiangu
Thomas, Dwayne Sim, and Josh Boyd also played well. Dwayne also kicked 2
goals and Wayne
Williams 1.
28 June 2008: The Rams run of honourable losses against the top teams continued when they
went down to the Cobras by 50 points at Sturt Road. The back six again worked
hard setting up many of the forward thrusts and the Rams efficiency in
offence and centre clearance work kept them within touch in a tight first
half.
This work rate along with the Rams tackling
pressure and 1%’ers had the Cobra’s under the pump, and with
Rob McCard slotting through 2 1st quarter goals, and after a 5
goal 2nd quarter, Marion
went into the long break 13 points down.
The Cobras began the second half full of run,
and although Marion
continued their spirited attack on the ball Cove controlled the scoreboard
for the remainder of the game. Wes Bilney’s
goal in the last quarter the Rams only major for the half.
Brett Miegel continued his good form to be best
on ground with Richie Ray-Zwar, Wes Bilney,
captain Damien Knight, Kingsley Bilney and Warrick Stanborough amongst the
best. Adam Knight and Rob McCard also put in serviceable games along with
Ben Stokes and Justin Bell, who battled against taller opponents all day to
square the ruck duals.
Goal scorers were McCard 3, Wes Bilney and Mark
Beckman 2 each, and Brett Miegel 1.

The Reserves also lost to the Cobras 3.1 (19) to 19.11 (125). Best
players were Tyson Stephens, Matt Black, Josh Boyd, Mick Myers, and Rohan Mallard. Mick Myers, Josh Boyd, and Tjiangu
Thomas kicked 1 goal each.
The Under 16 squad are improving every game and
showing signs that there are some better times ahead. We need to remember
this team are a combined Under14/16 lower age group playing against larger
opposition. Keep putting in fellas, your skills are developing every week,
and with your endeavour you’re certain to succeed.
23 June 2008: Vale Peter Michael Squire. It is
with extreme sadness that I post the news that Marion lost one of their favourites
overnight with the passing of Peter Squire. Peter had been helping the club
medicos out over the last few months and his knowledge, good humour and old
jokes will be greatly missed.
Peter was somewhat a football legend himself.
With a raking left foot he played his early football with South Broken Hill
before being selected to try out at Geelong
in the VFL. When Peter returned to Broken Hill he played with Centrals
where he won the Middleton Medal in 1962. That year Peter also won the Mail
Medal and the John Crowley Medal for the longest kick. Peter was runner up
in the Middleton Medal in 1965 and was also a member of the Broken Hill
Team of the Century.
For those of us who knew him he will be sadly
missed.
Condolences to Peter’s wife Bev, sons
Michael, Mark, and Ian, daughter Melissa, and their families.
21 June 2008: The Rams endured their 6th
loss for the season in a tense struggle with Brighton at home, going down
by 20 points, 9.6 (60) to 11.14 (80). It was the middle quarters that cost Marion the game when we missed gettable goals and
allowed Brighton in for a couple of easy
ones in red time. Marion started the game
well, holding Brighton to 2 goals in the 1st
while Wes Bilney and Justin Bell slotted 1 each. Marion also controlled much of the play
in the 2nd quarter with Stokes, Beckman, and McCard all scoring
majors. After the long break, into the wind, Marion
again held Brighton to 3 goals while
Beckman and McCard each registered their second. Coming home with the
breeze in the last quarter the Rams had their chances but just
couldn’t register enough scores from their forward 50 entries to
catch the Bombers. Tom McGowan kicked 1 for the quarter and Ben Stokes
notched his second for the game.
Warrick Stanborough played an outstanding game
and was Marion’s
best, with Brett Miegel, Richie Ray-Zwar, Luke
Turner, and the consistent Wes Bilney also playing well. A special note
also for Marion’s defensive unit who
combined well throughout the day repelling many of Brighton’s
forward thrusts and setting up many of the Rams goals.
The goal kickers were Rob McCard, Mark Beckman, and Ben Stokes 2
each, Justin Bell, Wes Bilney, and Tom McGowan 1 each.

The Reserves also failed to register a win going
down to the Bombers 20.17 (137) to 1.0 (6).
14 June 2008: The Rams had seven inclusions into the
team to face Reynella, including acting captain Damien Knight, forwards Ben
Stokes, Justin Bell and Cohen Sulicich, and defenders Cameron Hatcher, Luke
Turner, and Kingsley Bilney. Unfortunately, Marion lost big man Ryan Wade before the
match, and Sulicich jagged a hamstring during the warm up. The loss of Wade
saw Justin Bell and Ben Stokes go into the ruck and although they gave away
considerable height they managed to square the contests with
Reynella’s ruck division.
Despite the initial setbacks the Rams pushed Reynella to the limit to
lead at the first change by 2 points. Reynella kicked to the lead in the
second quarter booting 5 goals to Marion’s
3, and managed to hold their lead during an even 3rd quarter
with both sides kicking 4. The Rams had their chances in the last but poor
kicking in front of goal let them down, with Reynella eventually running
out victors by 32 points.
The best for Marion
were Rob McCard (4 goals), Wes Bilney, Jason Marks, Ben Stokes, Kingsley
Bilney, and Warrick Stanborough. Marion’s
other goal kickers were Wes Bilney and Mark Beckman with 2 each, and 1 each
to Aaron Dereuver, Adam Knight, Kingsley Bilney, Brett Miegel, and Ben
Stokes.
The final score; Marion 13.13 (91) Reynella 19.9 (123).

Unfortunately the Reserves also went down to the Wineflies
1.4 (10) to 22.9 (141).
31 May 2008: Marion continued to
slide down the ladder when a depleted Rams lost their second in a row going
down to Port Noarlunga by 41 points at Commercial Rd. The Rams slow starts
continue to be an issue and they trailed the Cockle Divers by 19 points at
¼ time. Marion
managed to stay with the opposition in the 2nd and 3rd
quarters, but lost the last kicking 2 goals to Port’s 6.
Wes Bilney, Brett Miegel, and Brett Fishpool were again Marion’s best
three with Richie Ray-Zwar, Ryan Wade, and Adam
Knight also playing serviceable football.
Following on from his 3 goals last week Wes Bilney slotted 4, while Richie Ray-Zwar, Tom McGowan, Jason Marks, and Rob
McCard kicked 1 each.
The final score; Marion 8.4 (52) Port Noarlunga 12.21 (93).
Unfortunately the Reserves again failed to register their third win
going down by 120 points.
The final score; Marion 2.4 (16) Pt Noarlunga 20.16 (136).
27 May 2008:
Congratulations to Wes Bilney and his partner Tahlia
on the birth of their daughter Latiyah, sister to
Wes jnr.
24 May 2008: It was
a disappointing day for the Rams at Sturt road when they failed to
capitalise on the past three wins and allowed Flagstaff to hold sway for the majority
of the day to win by 31 points. The day started poorly when Luke Turner
pulled out just before the start of the reserves, and to compound the Rams
shortage of talls, Ben Stokes injured a hamstring
in the first quarter and Cameron Hatcher was red carded after a minor
dispute in the second. Marion’s
smalls, Wes Bilney, Brett Fishpool, and Brett Miegel fought hard throughout
the day but the Rams could not hold the Falcon’s big men and were
constantly smashed in the clearances. Marion
made a surge late in the last to close the margin to 9 points before Flagstaff steadied and
drew away.
Wes Bilney again was Marion’s
best, followed by Brett Fishpool, Brett Miegel, Ryan Wade, and Jason Marks.
Wes also kicked 3 goals. Luke Turner’s replacement James Peel kicked
2, and Adam Miegel and Jason Marks 1 each.
The final score; Marion 7.7 (49) Flagstaff Hill 12.8 (80).
Unfortunately the Reserves also failed to register a win going down
by 47 points.
The final score; Marion 3.6 (24) Flagstaff Hill 9.17 (71).
17 May 2008: In a
tight contest at Noarlunga the Rams managed to hold the home team in the
final quarter to win by 15 points. The quarter by quarter scores show the
difference throughout the day was less than a goal with Marion leading by 3 points at ¼ time and
¾ time, and the Shoes by 3 at ½ time. The home side failed to capitalise
with the wind in the final quarter and allowed the Rams to kick the final 2
goals of the game and hold on for the win.
Wes Bilney again set the Rams alight with Brett Miegel, Warrick
Stanborough, Richie Ray-Zwar, and Brett Fishpool
also leading the way.
The goal kickers were skipper Damien Knight with 4, Brett Miegel,
Adam Miegel, James Peel, Ben Stokes, Rob McCard, Warrick Stanborough, Richie Ray-Zwar, and Wes Bilney 1 each.
The final score; Marion 12.10 (82) Noarlunga 10.7 (67).
Unfortunately the Reserves failed to register their third win for the
season going down to the home side by 46 points.
The final score; Marion 5.2 (32) Noarlunga 11.12 (78).
15 May 2008:
Congratulations to Darren and Natalie Banyer on the birth of Logan Riley.
10 May 2008: The
Rams continued last weeks form to comfortably account for Aldinga in last
Saturday’s game. Marion got off to a great start to lead by 3 goals
late in the first term, but gave that lead up in red time to only lead by a
couple of points at quarter time. Marion
consolidated in the 2nd quarter holding Aldinga goalless whilst
kicking 3. The 3rd quarter was relatively even with both sides
nailing four goals. The final quarter saw Marion slot through 5 majors while again
holding the Sharks goalless.
The win sees Marion
sneak into the eight for the first time in 2008.
Best for the Rams were Richie Ray-Zwar with
48 touches, Warrick Stanborough, Wes Bilney, Brett Fishpool, and Luke
Turner. Ben Stokes kicked 8 goals and Damien Knight 4.
The final score; Marion 18.9 (117) Aldinga 9.10 (64).
3 May 2008: The
Rams, happy to be on home soil, finally notched their first win for the
season when they overpowered Morphettville
Park by 20 points.
The Rams controlled the majority of the game, but almost snatched defeat
from the jaws of victory when the Roos threw
everything at them in the dying minutes. New recruits Cameron Miller, Wes
Bilney, and Ben Stokes along with stalwart Brett Fishpool steadied the team
and the Rams held on for the final siren.
Best for the Rams were Ryan Wade, Richie
Ray-Zwar, Cohen Sulicich, Wes Bilney, Brett Fishpool, Luke Turner, Robbie
McCard, and Cameron Miller. Ben Stokes kicked 6 goals from full forward.
The final score; Marion 14.11 (95) Morphettville Park 10.15 (75).
26 April 2008: Again
the Marion Rams were unable to get across the line in a tense struggle at Morphett Vale High School.
The Rams controlled much of the play for the majority of the game but were
unable to shake of the determined Loins who eventually ran out winners by 8
points. Some very dubious umpiring decisions in the final few minutes cost Marion any chance of
regaining the lead and winning the match. The final score; Marion 10.12
(72) OSB/Lonsdale 11.14 (80).
19 April 2008: Marion was outclassed
by the Emus in a very polished and professional display of power football.
Although Marion had their chances, poor conversion cost them any hope of
staying in the game up to half time, and in the second half Morphett Vale
run riot. The final margin was 134 points, Marion 3.10 (28) Morphett Vale 22.30
(162).
To rub salt into a very exposed wound, Marion also lost their inspirational
skipper Darren Banyer with a shattered collar bone early in the second
quarter. It’s doubtful that Darren will take the field again for the
remainder of the year.
This week’s game against O’Sullivan’s
Beach Lonsdale, Marion will hopefully regain the services of, now acting
captain Damien Knight, key position player Rob Layton, and on-baller Cohen Sulicich.
12 April 2008: After a relatively successful
2007 taking out the Best and Fairest award for the third time, Darren
Banyer will again lead the Rams as captain for the 4th season in
a row in 2008. Mark Edwards Memorial Trophy winner Damien Knight has
maintained the vice captaincy for the third season. Other players to win
awards for the 2007 season were Brett Miegel - Runner-up to the Best and
Fairest, Brett Fishpool - Most Consistent, and Richie
Ray-Zwar - Best Utility.
In other news Marion is extremely pleased to have signed
a number of new players for season 2008 including Ben Stokes, Wes Bilney,
Rob Layton, Cameron Miller, Jason Marks, and John Fisher.
Marion is also
thrilled to have Nathan Agius and Paul Ditchburn
coaching the reserves this season.
The
club also wishes James McEntee all the best for
2008 in his attempt to resurrect his SANFL league career with
Woodville/West Torrens. James is an integral part of the Marion Machine and
his strength in the forward lines will be sorely missed in 2008.
